On DVD, full-screen is 720x480 and wide screen is ALSO 720x480. However, wide-screen has a flag that tells the player it is in anamorphic format (that is, squashed left-right). It is the player that expands such flagged video out to wide-screen. If MPC displays your DVD as wide-screen, it's "File > Save Image" also should save the snapshot as wide-screen.

Confirm that "View > Video Frame > Keep Aspect Ratio" is "checked" and "View > Video Frame > Override Aspect Ratio" is set to "Default".

If you can't work out why the snapshots save squashed rather than wide-screen, use your paint program to manually resize them to wide-screen size 852x480.

Technical note: 720x480 on a DVD is equal to 640x480 on the computer due to aspect ratio of the different displays.

If you get the "getCurrentImage() fail : hr = 8000ffff" error then you need to change the rendering.

From the Media Player Classic Menu bar go to
"View" "Options"

Under the "Playback" item in the left pane
select "Output"

If you have "Overlay Mixer" selected under Direct Show Video then you can't do image captures (as it states in the first footnote).

Select a different radio button such as "VMR9 Renderless" (which worked for me) and try that.

Note that "System Default" might not work either if you system defaults to "Overlay Mixer".

thank you~ i had tried disabling the hardware acceleration in windows media player but ended up with an image in paint that would move when the movie moved, so I'm ecstatic this method actually got me the captures I wanted!
