If you are receving the error code 8100030d when signing into MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger, you can try out the following:
For MSN Messenger:
Click Start, click Run, type cmd , and then click OK to open the command prompt.
At the command prompt, type the following commands. After each command line, press ENTER:
cd\
cd %appdata%\microsoft
cd "msn messenger"
del /s listcache.dat
For Windows Live Messenger:
- For Windows XP:
Right click on the Start button and then click Explore to open Windows Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. Click the View tab. In the Advanced settings list, select Show ...

The long waiting Microsoft has finally released the MSN Messenger 2009 Final build 14.0.8050.1202 (also known as MSN Messenger 2009 Final build 14.0.8050.1202, MSN Messenger 9 Final build 14.0.8050.1202, Windows Live Messenger Final build 14.0.8050.1202, Windows Live Messenger 9 Final build 14.0.8050.1202, WLM 2009 Final build 14.0.8050.1202, WLM 9 Final 14.0.8050.1202).

Are you unable to login to Windows Live Messenger 9 Beta (also known as MSN Messenger 9 Beta, WLM 9 Beta, Windows Live Messenger 2009 Beta, MSN Messenger 2009 Beta, WLM 2009 Beta) and getting the error code 8000402a?
I was experiencing the issue for some time and just exiting and re-starting the application solved it.
Basically what i figured out is when the messenger attempts to start the login process before my pc is properly connected online, it starts throwing the error even after a proper connection.

Are you getting error 810003c1 when trying to login to MSN Messenger 9 (also known as Windows Live Messenger 9, WLM 9, MSN Messenger 2009, Windows Live Messenger 2009, WLM 2009)?
This error can be caused if the region setting for your account is not set. If you are seeing this error, please go to https://account.live.com/EditProf.aspx and make sure the Country/Region field is set correctly to your own country.

The latest build of Windows Live Messenger 9 (also known as MSN Messenger 9, WLM 9, Windows Live Messenger 2009, MSN Messenger 2009, WLM 2009) provides a new feature calles "Favorites".
Basically its a special contact group which makes it easy to communicate with your frequently used (or most important) contacts by sticking them on top of everything. Very similar to "sticky threads" on forums.
How you add a friend to this "Favorites" group?
Right click on the contact you wish to add to favorites and click on "Add to favorites"

Wondering where went the display pictures of your friend and yourself from the conversion window of the new Windows Live Messenger 9 Beta? (also known as Windows Live Messenger 2009, WLM 9, WLM 2009, MSN Messenger 9, MSN Messenger 2009, and what else?)
Dont worry, Micro$oft has not (yet?) started to eat up display pictures or charge you to have one. They just shifted it to the left side of the conversation window.
